Module/Course Description

Course Title: Applied Finite Elements

Course Code: LJMU-7501-UCEPGĀ

Programme: MSc in Civil Engineering

Credits: 20.00

Course Description:

Aims
The module will introduce students to the finite element method and explore the underlying theory of finite element methods. Students will investigate the performance and reliability of finite element methods in civil engineering applications, such as structural problems including material nonlinearity. The theoretical aspects of the method will be covered in lectures - the module is intended to be practical in nature with students having the opportunity to practice via a range of tutorials and assignments using commercial finite element software.

Learning Outcomes
After completing the module the student should be able to:
1 Formulate element stiffness matrices and analyse simple structures using the direct stiffness method.
2 Use different material models and element types to approximate the behaviour of different materials and structures.
3 Explain fundamental concepts of the finite element theory.
4 Use commercial finite element analysis packages to carry out linear and nonlinear analysis of structures.
